The background

CLIMATE EMERGENCY INTERACTIVE is a virtual watch party – where people from around the world gather online to experience a film together. It’s about the climate and ecological emergency. And how it relates to social justice, colonialism, sexism, intersectionality, politics, and creativity. It’s a collaboration between UNIT9 and the University of the Arts London (UAL). It was written by UAL students and staff. And it aims to help students at UAL and people around the world find ways to build a more sustainable future. But it’s free to anyone who finds it useful. The film rethinks the traditional passive film-going experience. It creates an interactive, participatory experience – where you affect the film you watch.  It turns viewers into doers. Please watch the trailer below:

The execution

It’s a virtual watch party – where people from around the world gather online to watch a film together. But it rethinks the traditional passive film-going experience. It creates an interactive, participatory experience – where you affect the film you watch.  It turns viewers into doers

The film is in four sections – with questions and choices that participants answer together by calling out. And the answers change what is seen on the screen. After each section, there’s a facilitated discussion and debate on the themes it raises. It aims to get you thinking, debating, creating and organising.

Climate Emergency Interactive is a collaboration between two creative powerhouses: University of the Arts London (UAL) and UNIT9. Connecting them is UNIT9 director Martin Percy – who is also an Associate Lecturer at UAL’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

The results & The audience feedback

Climate Emergency Interactive was created and is viewed entirely under lockdown conditions. It has run in dozens of sessions with up to 125 people in each session. 65% of UAL students are from outside the UK – and many were unable to travel in 2020. Climate Emergency Interactive is an accessible and inclusive experience that has brought together students and others from China, India, Africa, the EU, the US, and all across the UK. It continues to run regularly. And we hope that YOU will find time to join our next live session.
